What Are They?

Soapnut berries come from the Sapindus mukorossi tree, native to India and Nepal. The berries are picked and dried and then the shells (or husks) are removed and used for a property they contain called saponin. Saponin is a natural surfactant that can be used as a cleaning agent with amazing properties!

Their History

Soapnut berries have a long history of being used for cleaning purposes, especially in China and India. In 1578 soap nuts were recorded for their medicinal value and cleaning properties in the Compendium of Materia Medica written by Li Shi Zhen, the famous physician. They were found to treat skin conditions and also to be useful agents for cleaning.

For centuries soapnut berries have been used successfully for all sorts of washing purposes and we have found that their benefits are still relevant today!
